Kavara was one of the minor gods who
survived the battle with the Dragon who struggled to find new
followers. It wasn’t until Queen Ignace of Andover destroyed an
invading army with her aid in the second century that worship of Kavara
became more widespread. When Signon came to power, he chose her as one
of the gods who should be judged by the Storm. He gathered several of
her relics and ordered them brought to the Storm but a group of Kavara’s
followers managed to seize the artifacts and flee to the sea where they
took ship for Lion’s Jaw Bay. The Church of the Storm pursued them but
before they could recapture the relics, Kavara’s wizards incinerated the
boat and the relics fell to the bottom of the sea.
Until recently, many powerful wizards
revered her for her control of the mystical arts. Unfortunately those
most inclined to follow her were also those most inclined to oppose the
nothrogs in the east and elves in the west who recently invaded the
lands of the humans. Against these numerous foes, Kavara’s followers
suffered grievous losses and her power is at its lowest in years.
As the Goddess of Magic, Kavara
encourages her believers to spread the use of magic to anyone who
demonstrates the talent for it. Magic is a powerful force that can be
used to advance a multitude of causes, but for her followers, it is an
end to itself. While more studious spellcasters tend to follow Neus,
Kavara appeals to those desiring quick results or who are impatient with
more cautious approaches.
As Mistress of Emotion, Kavara
encourages her followers to allow their emotions free reign. To hold
back anger or sorrow is to deny their true selves. Her followers are
turbulent people and difficult to predict as they always follow the most
recent urgings of their heart. It also makes them hated and reviled by
the Deverenians for abandoning self-control and logic. They go to
emotional extremes easily and disdain all moderation, often wavering
between indecision and making hasty decisions.
Many call upon Kavara during
emotional outbursts and oaths containing her name are common. She uses
this practice to expand her acceptance and attract new followers.
“Kavara’s Kiss” denotes passion and “Kavara’s Frown” denotes fervent
opposition. The most common oath is to call upon “Kavara’s Wrath” to
express anger. Worshippers who have displayed great faith and who call
upon this oath while enraged have a 1% chance to channel a portion of
her power. The person gains the spellcasting ability of a tenth level
wizard with only one spell of each appropriate level, however the
supplicant has no way of knowing what spells he has gained in this
manner until he attempts them. More than one follower has called upon
this power only to incinerate himself in the flames of his own spell.
Those who follow Kavara know that
after death, they will appear in an enormous ball of flames. The
faithful are transformed into flames which burn in eternal fury and
savage joy. Those who have sinned against Kavara will find their
transgressions burned away, a process which can result in decades of
agony.
The church of Kavara
is a rather small faith with only a few hundred priests scattered across
the Accordlands. Those who feel the calling must study with a priest
for at least a year to understand the nuances of worship and then are
allowed to choose their own parish. They teach the rudiments of faith
to those in their parish and encourage people to seek Kavara in their
everyday lives.
